PANTS

“Good morning Keio. How are you guys doing today? It is March 4, 2009 and today’s weather is sunny. For today’s lunch, we have chicken something….I do not know any details.”
All our school days are always started with this boring announcement. We are already used to this so some students might be feeling comfortable of it. Actually I am not complaining, I am OK with this because this is what this school Keio Academy of New York should be looked like. I like it.

As through about three years here, I think this school is not a kind of normal or common one. Of course this school has dormitory life system so obviously it is different from other school in not only Japan but also the United States. However I think there are still some big differences between this school and other dormitory schools. In the other words, these differences are good mood with a great deal of individuality for this school. Let me show you some examples.

As usual days, when we go to school, we can wear our own ordinary clothes. Everyone wears different style or colors of clothes everyday especially the girls so it is very good and interesting for us and of course me. However on Wednesday we are required to be worn in Keio school uniforms. We have to wear same socks, same colored plants and jackets, same much long ties and black leather shoes. If you forgot even just one of them, you might get a BVS which is a penalty sheets and called Behavior Violation Slip and you should stay in the school for extra study after school of that day. I think we do not need to wear Keio Uniform once a week without any reasons. How do you feel about this?

As one more thing everybody might think it is strange rule is that we are not allowed to wear any jeans to come to school. Nowadays how many people dose wear jeans a single day? Who think all jeans are dirty and it does not fit to study? Some kind of jeans pants which has damaged like design on it or much paint on it might be not fit for school days. However this problem would be very easily solved if the teachers who noticed it and felt not happy with that warn to those students. Is that so hard or boring jobs? I do not think so.

There are much more problems not only these two. Some adults or Keio faculties teachers might feel it as not big issues but these things are very serious problems because it will not be solved if there is no help from the adults or Keio faculties teachers. We strongly hope these little problem will be solved and not only our school days but also dormitory life will be more better than now. Let’s do something we can!

Most important thing is to start something to do or say to do that.

Many Keio schools require some form of uniform every day. For example, SFC, where I used to teach, required students to wear the "half uniform" everyday: that is, Keio-approved pants for boys, and skirts for girls, and then the students could choose whatever they wanted (within reason) for the top part of the uniform. Full school uniform was only used for important events.

I think it is good that we have one day a week where students have to wear the uniform. After all, the other four days students are pretty much free to choose what they want (except jeans). I think jeans are too casual for school. Anyway, I think the way things are now is pretty good.

And next year you won't have to worry about a uniform at all for class.
